The Doorway to Hell (1930) Review: The Good, The Bad & How to Watch  American Film, Crime, Drama Academy Awards, 1931- Nominee: Best Writing, Original Story The early 1930s in Hollywood were marked by a frantic, electric energy as the industry found its voice—literally. In the middle of this transition, a gritty little gem called The Doorway to Hell slipped into theaters, offering a blueprint for the gangster epics that would soon dominate the silver screen. While it often sits in the shadow of the titans that followed, this film captures a specific, raw moment in cinematic history that feels surprisingly modern even today. German Film, Drama, Crime
English title: Under the Thousand Lanterns

Official Selection

Under the Thousand Lanterns (German: Unter den tausend Laternen) is a 1952 French-West German crime film directed by Erich Engel and starring Michel Auclair, Gisela Trowe, and Hanna Rucker. It was entered into the 1952 Cannes Film Festival. It was made by Real Film at the Wandsbek Studios in Hamburg and on location in the city. The film's sets were designed by Albrecht Becker and Herbert Kirchhoff.

A nifty little whodunit, this film introduced the very popular and powerful melancholic waltz hit "Unter den Tausend Laterne" (Under thousand lanterns) by Michael Jary, which gave the film its unofficial title - the actual name in the opening credits is "Die Stimme des Anderen" (The voice of Another). This picture captures the mood of "European film noir" most perfectly, the cast is good and the dialog plausible. The plot: a young prima donna at a musical comedy stumbles upon murder - or is it murder? - and soon has to choose whether to blame the man she loves or to take the blame herself. Definitely worth a watch as a moody yet slow moving crime story with some good music and singing. Fortunately, no comedy involved to spoil the feeling of constant sadness and depression.
