The Doorway to Hell (1930) Review: The Good, The Bad & How to Watch  American Film, Crime, Drama Academy Awards, 1931- Nominee: Best Writing, Original Story The early 1930s in Hollywood were marked by a frantic, electric energy as the industry found its voice—literally. Spanish Film, Comedy, Satire
English title: Welcome Mr. Marshall!

Winner: Comedy Film (International Prize)

Welcome Mr. Marshall! (Spanish: ¡Bienvenido, Mister Marshall!) is a 1953 Spanish comedy film directed by Luis García Berlanga, and considered one of the masterpieces of Spanish cinema. The film highlights the stereotypes held by both the Spanish and the Americans regarding the culture of the other, as well as displays social criticism of 1950s Francoist Spain (showing a typical Spanish village, with typical inhabitants: a priest, the majority of the population that are peasants, the mayor, and a hidalgo). The film was entered into the 1953 Cannes Film Festival. It was the first full-length film Berlanga directed alone. This movie is well considered all over the world and it is not difficult to see why. It was made in 1952 but it still remains as one of the truly classic movies of Spanish cinema

The title is often mentioned in discussions of American investment in Spain as a caveat against delusion. An example is the 2012-2013 Eurovegas project. The film is one of the influences on the 2019 Spanish comedy film The Little Switzerland.

The little village of Villar del Río is awaiting the song performance of Carmen Vargas, ‘The Great Andalusian Star’. The quiet village is governed by a deaf, naughty and good-natured Mayor, who’s only seeking the way to give life to the place. More on Wikipedia or Mubi
